Bau Bau Opal is a variety of common opal that is colored by nickel minerals giving it a beautiful and bright apple green presentation.

Bau Bau Opal can often be mistaken for chrysoprase as both minerals are similar in color since both minerals are nickel-bearing, however, the two are very different in terms of specific gravity and refractive index which is important to distinguish for those who do lapidary artwork.

Also known as Prase Opal, Bau Bau Opal gets its own distinguished name due to its being found in Indonesia, and many pieces that are being discovered look similar to grape agate due to the environment and the volcanic activity in the locality.

Prase Opal has been found in slabs in Tanzania and Russia but they don't look the same as Bau Bau Opal in terms of crystal habit.

Indonesia is geologically young and although the locality does not produce a lot of high-pressure rocks and minerals that form deep within the earth, it does produce an incredible lineup of beautiful fossils, agates, and jaspers that are formed through volcanic activity near or across the surface of the earth.

While Grape Agate is formed as a result of the decay of submarine pillow lavas, Bau Bau Opal is actively being researched to understand why the mineral is developing similar characteristics to Grape Agate causing it to look like "green grapes". So far this is a formation specific only to the Indonesian locality which is what makes Bau Bau Opal so special.

While not all specimens display these"green grapes", Bau Bau Opal is a stunning electric green mineral that is covered in sparkly, druzy silica and presents raw, brightly colored veins running through the matrix of the rock making it a great addition to any collection.

Please know that this mineral is sensitive to UV light and the color will fade if displayed in direct sunlight.

โ˜€๏ธ The colors in the photos represent the actual color as accurately as possible. Photos are most often taken indoors, during the day and in natural light that could either be bright sunshine or cloudy overcast natural lighting depending on the weather. If I need to photograph specimens during the evening hours, I use a ring light. Colors may vary on different phone and computer screen systems. We do not under any circumstances, edit our photos.

Care instructions

Some gems and minerals can be fragile and we recommend handling your specimen with care. Please also know that out of abundance of caution, we do not recommend the trend of putting mineral specimens in your drinking water as it is not always healthy to do so. Additionally, some minerals are water soluble and using water as a method to clean certain specimens can lead to deterioration. We do recommend dusting your minerals with a wide paintbrush you can find at the dollar store or by using an air can.
